8th Reading Discussion

On Wednesday, we'll continue our discussion of The Giver. Please have chapter 13 read and bring three discussion questions to pose to the class. Remember, this is your time to lead your own discussion, so put some thought into not only what you have to say, but how others may respond or disagree.

If you're having difficulty, consider this brief passage on page 93.

The Giver shrugged. "Our people made that choice, the choice to go to Sameness. Before my time back and back and back. We relinquished color when we relinquished sunshine and did away with differences." He though for a moment. "We gained control of many things. Be we had to let go of others."

Think about how the Giver and the community would define control.  A handful of you were in my reading class last year. To take things a step further, consider comparing the idea of "sameness" in this novel to that in Kurt Vonnegut's "Harrison Bergeron."
