Consider a book that you have read that was turned into a movie, like Harry Potter, The Lightning Thief, or The Lord of the Rings. Think about how the author intended the story be presented to the reader. In the novel, specific characters were created in a specific setting with a specific purpose. Oftentimes, when the story is translated to film, several small things are changed. For instance, characters may be added or removed in order to help the movie "flow" more seamlessly. The time period may be adjusted by a few or a few hundred years in order to make the story more appealing to a movie-going audience.
Your task is to write a five-paragraph essay comparing the two versions of a story that you enjoy. Please organize your essay according to the outline below:
Paragraph 1: Introduce the story and its two versions (i.e. very briefly describe the overall plot of the story)
Paragraph 2: Describe the novel version of the story and some things that you think were well done or done poorly by the author.
Paragraph 3: Describe the film version of the story and some things the that you think were done well or done poorly by the filmmaker.
Paragraph 4: Compare the novel version of the story to the film version of the story. Which one did you enjoy more and why?
Paragraph 5: Conclusion
If you haven't read a novel that has been adapted to film, you may choose one of your favorite stories and imagine how you would create a movie from it. How would you change it in order to be as entertaining as possible? Remember that you have to convey the ideas represented in a 200-300 page novel in just an hour-and-a-half. This is no easy task. Take time to carefully consider how you would change the story, what you would cut out, and what you would add.
